Power rankings

There's a new number one and the Rabbitohs are on the rise. Do you agree with this week's rankings?

1 MELBOURNE (3) 1-0

They needed their hard core of genius players to get them through against the Dragons. They don't have the depth of last year, but if they don't get hit too hard by injuries they are going to be in the mix again at the end of the season.

2 CRONULLA (2) 1-0

They won, as they should have, against Penrith, but, gee, they are hard to watch. Still, that's their ground-the- opposition-into-the-turf style, and while they don't have a lot of points in them they probably won't need a lot to win most games.

3 WARRIORS (4) 1-0
They took their foot off the pedal against Parramatta, which allowed the opposition to think they were back in with a chance, but while they were rolling to a big first-half lead they looked terrific. And now they get Stacey Jones back from injury.

4 BRISBANE (7) 1-0
It could have gone either way against North Queensland, but to Brisbane's credit they made sure it went theirs. It was a high-quality game and the Broncos looked strong in attack whenever Karmichael Hunt joined in alongside Darren Lockyer.

5 NORTH QUEENSLAND (5) 0-1
They deserve to stay thereabouts, since their game against Brisbane was the most intense, fast-paced contest of the weekend. Mistakes late in the game cost them, but they should win at home against the Tigers this weekend.
6 SOUTH SYDNEY (10) 1-0

The Rabbitohs are one of those teams people find it easy to get excited about when they win, so we have to be careful not to get caught up in the hype. But as someone who tipped them to make the finals, I readily admit I'm a believer.

7 BULLDOGS (12) 1-0
We must be careful not to sell the Bulldogs short, just because they were playing a Manly team that must have been distracted by their off-field problems. The Bulldogs looked fast in attack and furious in defence, and have rebuilt ideally.

8 MANLY (1) 0-1

Who knows what sort of ride we're going to go on with the Sea Eagles this season. They should find it a bit easier to prepare for their game against the Warriors, but they certainly won't find the Warriors easy. They badly miss Brett Stewart.
9 ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA (6) 0-1

There was plenty to like about the way they played against Melbourne. They are going to need to push the envelope a bit more in attack at some stage, but that will come. As long as they keep the error rate down, they will do well.
10 GOLD COAST (14) 1-0

Got into trouble early against Newcastle, but managed to get out of it just as easily. There is no doubt they have a first-choice team capable of making the finals - it's a matter of whether their questionable depth gets tested out by injuries.
11 WESTS TIGERS (15) 1-0
They did well in the second half against Canberra, when they dominated possession, but there must be concern about their red-zone defence in the first half. Still a lot to work on, but at least they have begun the season with a win.

12 PARRAMATTA (11) 0-1
They are a worry, the Eels. They couldn't adjust to the pace against the Warriors until the Warriors had established a strong lead and it was too late. Too early to write them off, but they need a bigger contribution from key players.

13 CANBERRA (9) 0-1

They finished the first half so well against the Tigers, but then couldn't score a point in the second half. They didn't have much possession after the break, but there's no point in blaming anyone else for that. Need to find their groove.
14 SYDNEY ROOSTERS (8) 0-1
Oh, what a worry they are. I saw them as being in trouble before round one and I see them as being in a lot more trouble now, after the Rabbitohs ripped them apart. It is shaping as a tough season for a team that lacks quality depth.

15 NEWCASTLE (13) 0-1
They began well against the Titans, but then got run over. They are going to be a work in progress, the Knights. Now that Danny Buderus is gone it would be handy if Kurt Gidley could be everywhere on the field, but he's only human.

16 PENRITH (16) 0-1
It's not really much of a positive to lose by only eight points to a highly-ranked team like Cronulla. The Sharks don't often win by big margins. The Panthers have a heap of work to do if they are going to avoid finishing well back this season.

Warriors should be top and they will be soon when you realize they are THE deal this year. They showed a lot more than the Gummies in attack and when you take GI out of the Melbourne team they seem a lot less threatening. Warriors have the deepest bench which can cover for the loss of playmakers like Jones and Hohia. The only people bigging up the Ferals (rabbits & dogs) are their own supporters. Give it a rest guys until you undefeated after three or four games or at least until you can boast victories over better opposition than the Rorters and Unmanly.

These power rankings are most likely the Product of Greg Pritchard - you know, the sasme guy who wrote that they may as well award the World Cup to the 'Roos before the final anyway and was conspicuous post match by his absence from any discussion of the game. There's about as much rationale behind these Power rankings as there was back then

melbourne at 1?....no
easily the best team of the weekend was the rabbitohs, followed by the bulldogs, warriors, sharks, titans then storm, bris, tigers, dragons, cowboys, raiders, eels, knights, sea eagles, penrith, all the toyota cup sides, all the under ten sides, then the roosters

How on earth can melbourne be 1 and the non attacking team sharks be 2

they both are likely to miss out on the 8 , im still struggling to see the difference from the storm and the dragons, if you talking about the attack the sotmr needed golden point for christ stake to win.

What is the difference except the dragons have beter depth then the storm

OK i read that 3 times. Im a Hard Core manly supporter and too me that seems wrong. How are melbourne 1st. 1st should be the Rabbitohs, Almost Flawless. 2nd Bulldogs. They beat us well. Stuart isnt our whole team and thats no excuse for the way my team played.

Sorry but this power ranking is wrong...Its not often wrong, but this time its way off!!!!

As a souths fan, that was a great win. I want to get excited about those bunnies and I'm reasonably confident we'll beat Parra tomorrow night, but we'll see how we're doing in about 6 weeks time before i get too excited and can claim any semi-final aspirations.

We have a tough month coming after Parra - Knights (@Bluetongue)/Warriors (@Auckland)/Manly/Dogs. If we're still looking good after that then I'll get excited. Not yet.

Also don't forget Manly lost their first 2 games last season. So don't read too much into that loss to the dogs.

Early days gentleman.

You must be watching different games to me. The Bunnies looked fantastic, Sharks looked pedestrian at best, Broncos were unimpressive, Dragons don't look like they have much to offer and the Roosters are morals for the spoon with the team they have (Anasta, Pearce, O'Meley, Mason and the like are terribly overrated)

I don't agree with Cronulla at 2. They will finish towards the bottom of the top 8. They don't have enough points in them and I think this year it will hurt them more than last. Their seems to be a bit more emphasis on attacking football this year, that will hurt them.

Also Melbourne at 1 is wrong, they were at home and only won by a single point.

Manly are in a bit of trouble but I would expect as the season goes on they will rise. But 8th is fair enough based on their current form.

I'm happy you ranked Manly where they are. Des Hasler's 'flying under the radar' tactic is already working perfectly.

Melbourne No. 1 ?

Not on last week's performance. That start was a stuttering performance and gave rise for concern about some of the new men coming into the side. They were lucky to get that "golden point" and that win. Surely a single field goal shot doesn't determine top slot ?

And where would they have been if Inglis had missed that field goal and the Dragons have won ? A lot there riding on a piece of luck if this is truely a measure of performance.

Melbourne didn't deserve a No.1 slot off this performance and thats coming from a Storm fan.

Greg, your a fool!

I don't see how Melbourne are No. 1 having beaten the dragons by just 1 point, while Brisbane who also won by 1 are 4th. Even stranger is Nth Qld at 5th and the Dragons at 9th. Melbourne may have been in the grand final last year, but were walloped by Manly, and remember were lucky to be there at all given their get out of jail free card against Brisbane.

And if you truly thought the Roosters were woeful even before the season began, then it doesn't make much sense to put the rabbits 6th, despite their big win. If Souths were playing a team you thought would lose, Souths can't have been that great.

Regardless, I'm with you on hoping they do well. Hoping for a Dragons v Bunnies GF :)

Im a manly supporter and fully agreed with your selections last week that the premiers, 40-0 i may add, should be ranked number 1. One loss to a dogs team that will make the eight and you have dropped them behind a team that lost, in the cowboys, and a flash in the pan rabbitohs? I will enjoy seeing you forced to rank them higher in the coming weeks.

these power rankings are crazy? bulldogs are 7? The are in for a massive season. their manly victory is no fluke.
Cronulla as 2?
Normally the power rankings make sense, but not so far.
